SPOTTING SCOPE’S 9 BUYER’S TIPS
  1. Angled or Straight Eyepiece?
An angled eyepiece is particularly good when your scope height or angle vary. An angled scope also works well, for example, when shooting prone, because it’s easier to look down through your spotting scope to locate your point of impact.

  2. Water Resistant
It goes without saying that it’s not always dry and sunny when we hit the range. A water-resistant scope is a must. Water in the body of the scope will condense on the inside of the lenses, and you can forget about visibility.

  3. Weight
When you head out for the range, you’ll be schlepping plenty of gear. Why make it harder with a heavy spotting scope?

  4. Folded Light Path
This means the light moves through a series of mirrors and lenses that allows the total length of the scope to be shorter (more compact) than the calculated focal length. A shorter scope means it’s more portable, and easier to keep stable on a tripod.

  5. Exit Pupil
A large exit pupil means more light coming out of the eyepiece, which means it is easier to see. Exit pupil reduces as magnification increases, making images more dim.

  6. Objective Lens Diameter
This is the measurement of the front lens of a scope. It’s usually the second number of the description of a scope. For example, 4 x 50 mm means the scope has a magnification of four and the objective lens diameter is 50 millimeters.

  7. Linear Field of View
The linear distance, left to right, is what you are able to see at a specific distance (usually 1,000 yards) away. The greater the field of view, the more you can see.

  8. Close Focus
This is the closest an object can be to the scope while still being able to maintain focus. Since you will most likely use your spotting scope to view targets at a distance, being able to focus on things very close may not matter.

  9. Eye Relief
This is the distance from the scope at which your eye can obtain the full viewing angle. If your eye is outside this distance, a reduced field of view will be obtained. Generally, the higher the magnification and the larger the intended field-of-view, the shorter the eye relief.
